Braun Oral-B Smart Guide Display Versions

In this article we explain the different models and sub-versions of each of the Braun Oral-B wireless Smart Guide displays, to complement our Smart Guide repair page.

The Smart Guide display units were supplied with various models of Braun Oral-B electric toothbrush and allow the user to keep track of their brushing progress throughout each brushing session. Two main models of Smart Guide exist, the squarer Type 3741 and the more rounded Type 3742. Each type has several variants and offers compatibility with different models of toothbrush.

Which Smart Guide Do I Have?

If you are looking for a replacement Braun Oral-B Smart Guide unit for your toothbrush because yours is beyond repair or has been lost then use the information below to see which one you need, where to buy one and how to get pair it with your toothbrush.

Smart-Guide-Types-3741-3742-Braun-Oral-B

Type 3741

Smart-Guide-3741-Braun-Oral-BThe Type 3741 Smart Guide from Braun Oral-B is the original model and comes in at least 4 different sub-versions, each with slightly different icons and features. Unfortunately the different versions are not interoperable so if you are looking for a replacement Smart Guide that is compatible with your electric toothbrush use our guide below to determine which version of 3741 Smart Guide you have or need. The 3741 Smart Guide is powered by two AA size batteries and we recommend that only Alkaline batteries are used.

Pulsonic version

Smart-Guide-3741-Pulsonic-VersionThis version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide was supplied with the Pulsonic range of toothbrushes and only works with Pulsonic toothbrushes marked Type 3723 on the handle.

The Pulsonic Smart Guide displays a diagram of a toothbrush with a tall narrow brush head attached. It shows no stars on the screen and the colour of the rubber seal on the back of the Smart Guide is unknown at present. Please leave a comment below if you have one of these and can tell us which colour the seal is. Once brushing is completed it will show a smiling face 🙂

Up to two separate Pulsonic toothbrushes can be synchronized with the Pulsonic Smart Guide so see the ‘Pairing’ section lower down for instructions.

No Star Triumph version

Smart-Guide-3741-Triumph-Version-No-StarsThis version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide was supplied with some of the original Triumph v1 range of electric toothbrushes and will only work with Braun Oral-B toothbrushes marked with Type numbers 3738 marked on the bottom of the handle.

The No Star Triumph Smart Guide displays a diagram of a toothbrush with a round brush head attached. It shows no stars on the screen and the rubber seal on the back of the Smart Guide is blue as shown in the photo below:

braun-oral-b-smartguide-3741-battery-terminals-2

Up to two separate Type 3738 toothbrushes can be synchronized with the No Star Triumph Smart Guide so see the ‘Pairing’ section lower down for instructions.

5 Star version

Smart-Guide-3741-5-Star-VersionThe 5 star version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide shows 5 stars at the bottom of the screen and has a grey rubber seal around the battery compartment.

oral-b-smartguide-3741-grey-seal

We’re not currently sure which Type numbers of toothbrush it was supplied with so do let us know in the comments below which toothbrush type number your 5 star Smart Guide works with. Up to two separate toothbrushes can be paired with the SmartGuide so see our synchronizing instructions lower down the page for how to do this.

4 Star version

Smart-Guide-3741-4-Star-VersionThe 4 star version is believed to be the last version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide and was supplied with the Type 3762 toothbrush which is one of the Triumph v2 range of toothbrushes. This Smart Guide shows 4 stars at the bottom of the screen and has a grey rubber seal on the back, as shown in the photo below.

oral-b-smartguide-3741-grey-seal

It is possible that the 4 star Type 3741 Smart Guide can be substituted with version A of the 3742 Smart Guide as that display was also supplied with the Type 3762 Triumph toothbrush. Two separate toothbrushes can be paired with this Smart Guide at once so see our synchronizing instructions lower down the page for how to do this.

Type 3742

Smart-Guide-3742-Braun-Oral-BThe Type 3742 Smart Guide from Braun Oral-B is the newest model and comes in at least 2 different versions. Unfortunately the different versions are not interoperable so if you are looking for a replacement Smart Guide to work with your electric toothbrush use our guide below to determine which version of 3742 Smart Guide you have. Available in white and silver, this Smart Guide is powered by two AAA size batteries and we recommend that only Alkaline batteries are used, not zinc ones.

Version A

Version A of the Type 3742 Smart Guide has a letter A at the end of the string of numbers marked inside the battery compartment on the ridge between the two batteries. This version was supplied with Oral-B toothbrushes marked with Type 3762 on the bottom of the handle.

Version B / Version 2.1

Version B of the Type 3742 Smart Guide has a letter B at the end of the string of numbers marked inside the battery compartment on the ridge between the two batteries.

smart-guide-3742-a-b-version-text

Only available in white, version B of the 3742 is also known as the 2.1 version and will work with the Smart 4 4000 toothbrush and the Smart 5 5000. It will also sync with the Genius/Smart range of toothbrushes marked with Type 3765 on the toothbrush handle, but only on those brushes with an internal firmware version below version 13. The firmware version on your toothbrush can be checked using the Oral-B smartphone app. This is either under “Toothbrush Handle” in the app settings or can be shown by pressing and holding down the Oral-B logo in the app settings. If your 3765’s firmware is below version 13, or you have a different compatible toothbrush you might still need to enable the Smart Guide functionality on the toothbrush itself via the smartphone app before the brush will synchronize with the Smart Guide. Please let us know in the comments what firmware version you have and whether your brush will sync with the Smart Guide.

Where to Buy a Replacement Smart Guide

The only Smart Guide units still available brand new are of the 3742 type. For a 3741 you will end up buying a pre-owned one. If you find that you can’t repair your current Smart Guide using our instructions then the best place to find a replacement new or used Smart Guide is through the listings linked to below on eBay. Make sure you choose one of the same variant as your current Smart Guide as the different sub-versions are not interoperable and the wrong variant will not work with your toothbrush.

Please note that as an eBay partner we may receive a small commission if you make a purchase. This does not change the price you pay.

Don’t forget that you might need to ‘pair’ or synchronize your new SmartGuide with your toothbrush when it arrives. See the next section for synchronizing instructions.

Synchronizing your Smart Guide with your Toothbrush (Pairing)

Your Smart Guide can be synchronized (also called pairing or programming) to work with one or two Braun Oral-B toothbrushes at the same time, as long as both these brushes are of the same Type number.

Setup & Clock

To power up your SmartGuide slide open the battery cover on the back and insert two fresh Alkaline batteries (AA size for the Type 3741, and AAA size for the Type 3742 SmartGuide). The clock display should start flashing ’12:00′.

Press and hold the ‘set’ button inside the battery compartment until ’12h’ is flashing in the display. This means that time will be displayed in the 12-hour format. If you would prefer 24-hour time format press the  ‘h/min’ button once so that ’24h’ is displayed. Press ‘set’ to save the setting.

The hours digits should now be flashing. Keep pressing the ‘h/min’ button until the correct hour is showing and press ‘set’ to save the setting.

The minutes digits should now be flashing. Keep pressing the ‘h/min’ button until the correct minute is showing and press ‘set’ to save the setting.

Synchronizing

  • Open the battery compartment of your Smart Guide and hold down the ‘h/min’ button for 3 seconds until the display starts flashing ‘L ‐ ‐ ‐’
  • Switch on your toothbrush for a few seconds until the SmartGuide displays ‘L ‐ 1 ‐’
  • Switch off your toothbrush
  • If you have a second matching toothbrush to pair with the SmartGuide switch it on now and let it run for a few seconds until the SmartGuide displays ‘Full’
  • You can exit the pairing process by pressing either button inside the battery compartment.

Some toothbrushes have the facility to turn off radio transmission so if this has been used the toothbrush will be unable to pair with the Smart Guide.

Please leave any comments about the differences between Smart Guide versions below!

  1. Thanks very much for the instructions: now working well

  2. My toothbrush died, but since I already have the case, I’m looking to find the cheapest model with SmartGuide support. Do you know if models that don’t have SmartGuide, support it if used near one?

    1. What is the Type number marked on your toothbrush handle?

      1. a127 40624

        1. That looks like a serial number. Is there the word ‘Type’ or ‘Tipo’ followed by a 4-digit number?

    2. Does anyone know where I can get the smart guide bracket I was moving house and my old bracket broke

    3. I have the SmartGuide 3742 in Silver. Can it be synced with Oral B Genius X? I really want to be able to keep track of the time, and hope there is a way to get it to work.

  3. I have a Braun Oral-B Type 3709 toothbrush that needs a new battery.
Although in my 80th year I am capable of all DIY in my home and would appreciate your guidance in getting inside the 3709 as there seems to be some resistance to unscrew the base.
Once I’m in I will order the necessary battery.
    Regards,
    J. Jenkins

    1. Hello John,
Your Type 3709 Vitality toothbrush opens at the top rather than at the bottom. We have a photographic guide to opening the toothbrush and replacing the battery on our website here.

  4. Hello,
My Braun Oral-B Triumph v2 finally died (it sounded like a gear stripped while I was brushing). I really like the Smart Guide (I have the 4 star version of the 3741). I tried the app and it sucks using your phone in the bathroom. Does anyone know if there are any current brushes that work with this Smart Guide (3741). I have read elsewhere that the 3741 does not work with the newer brushes, but the 3742 does.
    Should I just skip the 3741 and get a 3742 and a new(er) brush?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Alan

    1. Hi Alan, The Oral-B v2 Triumph toothbrushes are still available as ‘SmartSeries’ brushes from some suppliers so you can replace like-for-like. There is some further information on our ‘which new toothbrush’ page here.

      1. Thanks for the quick reply.
        Thanks for the link.
I am considering the Oral-B Pro 7000 from Amazon USA (I live in the US).

  5. Hi,

I was wondering, is there any way one can make a 3742 A Smart Guide work with a Genius 8000 and if not, what exactly is the difference between the models? Thanks!

  6. Hi,

Could you elaborate more on the remark “You might need to enable the Smart Guide functionality on the toothbrush itself via the smartphone app before the brush will synchronize with the Smart Guide.” After a battery replacement am I not able to pair my toothbrush with the Smart Guide anymore. Thanks

    1. If you have the Oral B app installed on your smartphone you can use the app to configure different features on the toothbrush. One of these features is to enable SmartGuide communication between toothbrush and SmartGuide. This only works for certain models of toothbrush though. What is the 4-digit Type number marked on your toothbrush?

      1. I have 2 toothbrushes of Type 3764. They both used to be synchronised with the SmartGuide however currently only 1 is recognised and the other one doesn’t seem to connect anymore to the SmartGuide after a battery replacement. Radio transmission is activated on both toothbrushes.

        1. Have you tried resynchronising the SmartGuide with your toothbrush?

      2. 3765

  7. I have smart guide (3742 v2.1) coming with Pro7000 (type 3764). Recently I purchased Smart 4000N (type 3767). Initially Smart 4000N works with Smart Guide display. However, after I used 3764 handle once or connect 3767 handle to mobile phone via bluetooth, I can’t get Smart Guide working with new 3767 handle any more. Search the mobile app. It doesn’t have option of connect smart guide. Or maybe I didn’t find it. Tried to pair the Smart Guide to 3767, not successful. Plan to phasing out the Pro7000 handle.
I can see both 3767 handle (connect to mobile) and smart guide (connect to 3764) bluetooth working, just not be able to pair it.
Wondering what goes wrong? It works for 3767 at first. Then, can’t connect. Kindly wield

  8. Do you know if the new Oral B Smart 7000 and Oral B Smart 5000 can sync with the Type 3741 4-star smart guide?

    1. What are the type numbers marked on your Smart 5000 and Samrt 7000? They probably only sync with the type 3742 version B/version 2.1 SmartGuides, if they will even sync with any.

  9. I have a 5 star smart guide which works with my 3762 toothbrush. The battery has given out, and the replacement instructions are clear but scary. I love my smart guide. I don’t want to take my phone in the bathroom with me to brush my teeth. Are there any current new toothbrush products I can buy that will work with a smart guide or similar standalone timer display?

    1. Hi, the newest brushes seem to only work with the 3742 version B SmartGuides. For your 3762 brush you could either have the battery replaced via one of the repair service options here, have a go yourself with a soldering iron or replace the brush with one of the Oral B Smartseries (all one word) brushes which still come with a Smartguide.

  10. Type 3741 (grey, 4 stars outline and 5 stars painted over)
    1) 3762 work
    2) 3764 not work
    Type 3742 (Version B / Version 2.1)
    1) 3762 work
    2) 3764 work

    1. Where on the app can I activate smartguide sync?

  11. Somehow, the interval between achieved stars has become 45 seconds instead of the nominal 30. Can you tell me how to get it back to 30?

    1. At least with the SmartSeries 7000 model, the 45 second mode is the Deep Clean mode. Have tried changing modes if available on your model?

  12. Hi. I have 3762 type toothbrush with 3741 SmartGuide. Everything worked fine, but after battery replacement, I can’t pair them. SmartGuide shows “L – -“, I turn on the toothbrush and nothing happens. I’ve waited for 20-30 seconds – nothing. Tried to turn off the SmartGuide for a night(batteries remove) – did not help.
    What else can be done?

    Thank you.

    1. You might need to disable then re-enable radio transmission on the toothbrush. There will be instructions for this in the manual.

  13. Braun Oral-B Smart Guide type 3741 – no longer shows any display . Can I replace it?

    1. It could be the batteries or the circuit board connections as shown above. The display screen itself is unlikely to have become completely faulty. Only use batteries marked ‘alkaline’ to power your SmartGuide.

  14. Good Lord! I never DREAMED that the world of Braun electric toothbrushes could even BE this complicated!

EVEN toothbrushes have built in obsolescence due to the built in radios, computer chips and, no doubt, software. It is all a plot to force us to buy new every few years time.

Maybe, I’ stick with my manual toothbrush when my Type 3762 finally dies.

  15. Can I pair my Genius X 2000 (3771) toothbrush to the smart clock version B?

    1. Possibly. You will need to use the Oral-B App on a bluetooth smartphone to connect to your brush. Then there might be an option to enable SmartGuide connectivity for the brush buried in the app. If you cannot find this option in the app then it’s unlikely the brush will pair with a SmartGuide.

    2. Hi, did you make it work? I‘m considering buying a Genius X …

  16. I have a Type 3742 type B just suddenly stopped working. New batteries fitted still didn’t work.
Cleaned the battery contacts, very slight tarnishing removed and now works. These units have a rubber seal so it must be residue from the batteries rather than water. Sometimes the answer is very easy to find.

  17. 6000N wont connect to Version B of the Type 3742

I can get the screen into pairing mode but it does not pick up my new toothbrush.
I can still pair my old model, but can’t get the new one to pair.

I can connect to my phone app but the smart screen wont recognize the toothbrush.
there is no option in the app to turn on smart guide for the toothbrush.

  18. Anyone know if this links to Smart Series 4 4900 toothbrush?

    1. Hi Zoe, what is the 4-digit Type number marked on the bottom of your toothbrush handle?

  19. A V2 3762 tooth brush with blue travel case, charging base, charge base plate that holds 4 toothbrush heads and the 5 star guide came as a kit for braces… Thats what we bought for our son. All still working great.

  20. I have an aging Oral -B 5 mode Braun toothbrush that does not work like it used to. Could you suggest a compatible replacement that uses the Smart Guide 3741, please. I am in the UK.
    Please everyone keep safe.

    1. What is the type number marked on your toothbrush handle? And which version of the 3741 Smart Guide do you have, according to the differences above?

  21. I have the Smart Guide 3741 with four stars. My toothbrush itself does not have any identifying information other than “Triumph” on the handle. But the toothbrush base is type 3757. The toothbrush battery will no longer hold a charge for more than 30 seconds, and then needs a longer and longer charging period.
Are any currently manufactured toothbrushes compatible with this Smart Guide?

    1. Hi Margie, it sounds like you have a Triumph v2 toothbrush. We have a guide to replacing the internal battery of your toothbrush on our website here. If you cannot replace the battery yourself, or find a battery replacement service you can still buy the Triumph v2 toothbrushes new on eBay UK here or eBay.com here. You will need one that comes with another SmartGuide and not the ones with the light up ring near the head.

  22. Hi
I replaced new batteries AA but still thereis no sign even pushing the button h/min for more than 3 seconds. How I can repair my Wireless Oral B smart Guide Type 3741 IC:6856A. 3741

    1. Did you dismantle it and clean the PCB pads and the matching legs?

  23. Hi , I have Oral B Smart Series 5000 type 3757. Do you know which Smart guide is correctly? Thank you

    1. Hi Oscar, that type number is off your charger. What is the type number marked on the toothbrush itself?

  24. Do you know where I can buy a replacement: Braun Oral B Smart Guide & Clock Type 3741 – Optimises Brushing Time & Technique.
The latest model purchased suggested downloading the App but its not convenient to have phone in the bathroom and would like the wall mounted timer/clock.

    1. Hi Pauline, there are links in the article above, under the “Where to Buy a Replacement Smart Guide” section. You will find some new Smart Guides on eBay UK.

  25. Hi I have a Oral-B Braun 8000 which connects to my phone but doesn’t connect to the Braun Oral-B clock? There was a mention about if the toothbrush turns off it’s Bluetooth that can’t be connected? But the Bluetooth is either on or off so I’m not sure what that meant? I would like to keep the clock because I don’t always use the phone for the toothbrush any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

    1. When your toothbrush is connected to the app on your phone, is there a setting within the app to enable SmartGuide communication on the toothbrush?

  26. Bonjour,
J’ai un ORAL TRIUMPH PROFESSIONAL CARE avec un SMART GUIDE 5* 3741.
Je souhaite synchroniser un AUTRE ORAL B SMART 6500 avec mon SMART GUIDE
    Comment dois je procéder ?
    Merci de vos informations.

    1. What is the 4-digit Type number marked on the bottom of your Smart 6500?

      1. J’ai relevé handle type 3765

        1. Yes you can synchronise 2 brushes with 1 Smart Guide. For your type 3765 you will first need to use the mobile phone app to enable the Smart Guide/bluetooth connectivity setting on the toothbrush. Then you can synchronise that toothbrush with the Smart Guide.

          1. How do you enable smart guide connectivity setting on a 3765? I have it connected to the app.

  27. Hi. I cannot pair my Oral-B Genius 8000 Handle 3765 ( bluetooth ON or OFF whit my smart guide 3742 version B version 2.1 who was working well whit my Oral-B 7000 handle 3764.
    Appreciate your help.
    Thank You

  28. Hi, does the iO Series work with the 3742 display ?

    1. If you use the Oral-B smartphone app to connect to your iO series toothbrush, is there an option to enable Smartguide connectivity?

      1. Not sure as I dont have an iO series toothbrush yet. I wanted to make sure before I got one

        1. Your best option is probably to buy one of the black Triumph v2 models labelled as ‘SmartSeries’ 6000, 6500 or 7000. These have two buttons on the handle and are marked ‘Bluetooth’. They are still available to buy new from eBay here.

  29. I’ve just purchased a Oral B 360 and when I put my tooth brush on the charger the green light blinks but after a very short while the green light doesn’t come on anymore. Is it because my toothbrush is with full charge or is this a problem. This is my second Oral B electric toothbrush and my previous toothbrush the light was always blinking when my toothbrush was inserted.
    Thank you

    1. What is the 4-digit type number marked on the bottom of your toothbrush?

  30. Hi sir,

I have just bought a new toothbrush set and looked up all settings beforehand so i could use my existing Smart Guide (3742 B version). After receiving the toothbrushes (Oral-B Genius 8900 + Extra Handle) i tried to connect it to my Smart Guide but could not succeed 🙁 .

Is there a difference in radio`s for the Smart Guide and Bluetooth? I have enabled Bluetooth on the handle(s) like specified in the manual but when i set the Smart Guide in sync mode and start the brush its not recognized. Is the Smart Guide setting different then the Bluetooth setting?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. What are the 4-digit type numbers marked on the bottom of your two Genius toothbrush handles?

      1. Hi,

They are the 3765 handle model.

        1. Bluetooth might need to be turned off to enable the Smart Guide connectivity. I’m not sure what settings are available in the app.

          1. Hi,

I have checked this again last night. Have tried both settings (BT On and Off) but sadly it just won`t connect :-(. Also there is no setting to enable/disable Smart Guide compatibility in the Oral-B app when the brush handle is connected. Maybe the killed it with a specific firmware.

Is there a way to check the firmware version on a brush handle?

          2. As you mention, it looks like Oral-B have removed SmartGuide compatibility in the latest firmware of their Genius brushes. Apparently, starting with firmware version 13, the Genius toothbrushes can no longer connect to a Smart Guide. The Smart 4 4000 and the Smart 5 5000 should still be compatible. Perhaps there is a way to downgrade the firmware on the brushes. What version firmware is on your Genius brush? The app reviews mention that this is either under “Toothbrush Handle” in the app settings or can be shown by pressing and holding down the Oral-B logo in the app settings.

  31. Thanks for that great tip. I found the firmware version in the app like you mentioned. It is indeed version 13 :-(. Then i am returning these and start looking for an io 7 model.

Thanks so much for all your info!

    1. You’re welcome Robbert. The Smart 4 4000 and the Smart 5 5000 toothbrushes should still be compatible with the latest SmartGuide displays.
It’s pretty unbelievable that here we are in the 21st century with electric toothbrushes that have updateable firmware(!), and Oral-B are removing existing features in newer versions of the firmware. They’re not the only company that has done something like this – see Sony and their removal of Linux support from the Playstation 3.

  32. Hi,

I have Oral-B Smart 7 7000 which has 3765 on the toothbrush handle and the smartguide is version B, type 3742, white color. I have older version A, silver color, which according to you will not work with the toothbrush.

Of course version A wouldn’t synchronize, but version B, didn’t want to either. It synchronizes with my old toothbrush automatically. No need to set it up, but however I try to connect this new toothbrush, it simply won’t budge.

Someone said that toothbrushes made from 2020 are no longer compatible. Just wondering if that’s true or maybe I got a faulty toothbrush?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Sam, it looks like Oral-B have removed SmartGuide compatibility in the latest firmware of their type 3765 brushes. The article above has now been updated to mention this. Apparently, starting with firmware version 13, the Genius toothbrushes can no longer connect to a Smart Guide. Using the Oral-B app you can check the firmware version on your type 3765 brush. This is either under “Toothbrush Handle” in the app settings or can be shown by pressing and holding down the Oral-B logo in the app settings. What version is your toothbrush?
The Smart 4 4000 and the Smart 5 5000 toothbrushes should still be compatible with your SmartGuide.

      1. Hi,
Thanks for that. Mine is Smart, not Genius model. Don’t know if it matters. Checked the app and it says version 13. I’m out of luck it seems?

        1. Unfortunately it looks like you’re out of luck with your firmware.
Oral-B used the words Smart and Genius interchangeably on some versions of the type 3765 brush handle, depending on what features were enabled. They are all a type 3765 with the same internals under the skin.

          1. Thanks,
That feeling when you have to downgrade to upgrade.

  33. I have a type 3767 handset with a type 3742 version B smart guide. The handset has suddenly stopped communicating with the smart guide. Is there anything I can do to get it working together again? I’ve tried pressing h/min inside the guide and get the L – – but cannot do anything more

    1. Hi Sara, You might find that the radio transmission function of your toothbrush has switched off. According to the manual for your type 3767 brush:

To avoid electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts, deactivate the radio transmission before using it in restricted surroundings, such as aircrafts or specially marked areas in hospitals. Deactivate radio transmission when your toothbrush is turned off by pressing the on/off button for 3 seconds. All indicator lights will flash simultaneously. Follow the same procedure to reactivate transmission again. Note: Every time you turn your toothbrush off, when using it without radio transmission, the indicator lights will flash simultaneously.

  34. I have the Oral B 7000 model with the Smart Guide timer. There is a clear cover with a smiley face with it. What is it used for? Thank you!

    1. Do you mean the wall mounting bracket that clips to the back of the Smart Guide? You can stick the bracket to a wall/mirror/tile using the supplied mounting hardware. Orient the bracket with the smiley face the right way up, then clip your SmartGuide into the bracket.

  35. Hi, many years ago we purchased a Triumph Professional Care toothbrush (Oral-B Braun 5 mode) with the separate 4 star 3741 Smart Guide and still happy to have done so. However, the toothbrush is now end-of-life (fallen on the ground). We are searching for a new toothbrush and want to keep the 3741 Smart Guide (very handy when the grand children are in). There are so many different types available…. Can you advise which type toothbrush to buy in the Netherlands which is compatible with the Smart Guide?
Looking forward to receiving your answer.
    Kind regards,

    1. The 4-star type 3741 Smart Guide will probably only work with other Triumph v2 toothbrushes. These toothbrushes are still available new and are often labelled as SmartSeries brushes, sometimes in a box marked 6500. See our ‘Which new toothbrush‘ page for details on where to find the v2 Triumph brushes.

  36. My daughter has an Oral B 3772. Is there any way to sync it with a 3741 clock?

    1. Which version of the 3741 Smart Guide do you have?

  37. Hi,
I have 3762 toothbrush that died (battery dead + shock resulting in noisy motor) but my 3741 is still working and I love it. any option in 2023 to buy a compatible handle? (I also have the working charger).

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Laurent, the Type 3762 and 3764 are still available and the boxes are often labelled as the ‘SmartSeries’ 6500 and 7000. The only way to tell for certain that a Type 3762 or 3764 is inside the box is that the number D34.5xx.xx or D36.5xx.xx (where x can be anything) is printed on the box on the bottom near the charger Type number (3757). They also are sometimes labelled as a 5000 (with 2 buttons) but not to be confused with the 1 button version labelled as a 4000 or 5000 which is different, or the 5000 with light-up ring around the top. They are still available new from Ebay, for example by using this Ebay search.

  38. Hello, thanks to you I now know that I have Version B / Version 2.1 of the Smart Timer Guide. I just bought a new toothbrush Oral-B iO4 and I don’t actually have my phone in the bathroom most times when I brush my teeth. Can I connect the two at all?
    Best regards, C.

  39. Is there any way to downgrade a toothbrush handle’s firmware below 13? I like using the Smart Guide. I just picked up what I thought was the same exact toothbrush handle that I have been using with Smart Guide and it is the same, except is has Firmware 13 and will not connect to the Smart Guide. Boooooo!

    1. I would also like to know this, I have the exact same problem.

Girlfriend has the same brush (I assume with a older firmware), I thought it looked like a great option to replace my old triumph that wouldn’t hold a charge, so bought the exact same model but in black. This turned out to be a mistake since it won’t connect to any of our smart guides (even though hers actually came with a smart guide when she bought it).

  40. 25.7.2023: We have the Oral B Pulsonic type 3723 electric toothbrush and have it paired with the Smart Guide type 3741 – the seal on the latter is light grey in colour. To quote from your website “This version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide was supplied with the Pulsonic range of toothbrushes and only works with Pulsonic toothbrushes marked Type 3723 on the handle.”
The above quote from the website above describes exactly what we have. We live in Switzerland and now wish to buy a REPLACEMENT Oral B Braun electric toothbrush that can still be paired with the EXISTING Smart Guide device.

    1. Only another Pulsonic Type 3723 will work with that SmartGuide. Has your existing Pulsonic toothbrush failed? We have some Pulsonic battery replacement tips here.

  41. Hello, where can I buy just the screen of the smart guide 3741?, thanks

  42. How can I unpair a toothbrush from the 3742 smart display? I can pair it, but cannot find any information how to unpair (by accident I paired my toothbrush to the smart display of my wife)

  43. I have the 5 star version of the Type 3741 Smart Guide together with a Type 3762 toothbrush

  44. Hello,
I have a Type 3742 Smart Guide with 5 stars which came with a Triumph toothbrush. The Triumph toothbrush has now stopped working so I have purchased a Smart5 5000 toothbrush to replace it. Straight out of the box the Smart 5 connected with the Smart Guide and worked perfectly. Stupidly I thought I would try the Smart 5 with the Oral-B app which seemed to work. However, having connected to the app, the Smart 5 will no longer connect to the Smart Guide, even when I try the synch procedure detailed on your website.
    The Smart Guide number is 8 434 40 04 R B
    The Smart5 toothbrush is Type 3767 number 5 AB235 10833
Hopefully you have seen this problem before and can help me to reconnect the Smart 5 to the Smart Guide.
    Thanks very much.
    Best regards,
    Steve

  45. Hello,
Further to my previous post, on further investigation of the app, I have found the option “SmartGuide Device Feedback”, which is currently turned off. However, when I try and turn this option on it won’t let me. It’s as if this option has been disabled, either within the app or in the toothbrush.
    The Smart Guide number is 8 434 40 04 R B
    The Smart5 toothbrush is Type 3767 number 5 AB235 10833
Hopefully you have seen this problem before and can help me to reconnect the Smart 5 to the Smart Guide.
    Thanks very much.
    Best regards,
    Steve

    1. In theory it’s possible to enable SmartGuide connectivity for the toothbrush within the app but I am not familiar with the app unfortunately.

  46. Just replaced my 20yo Oral B with a new type 3765, I have the original 3741 4 star version Smart Guide. Following the instructions to pair I see is L – – , and the Blue Tooth signal is functioning on the brush but it refuses to pair. Are these two items incompatibale?

    1. You probably need a Version B / Version 2.1 of the Type 3742 Smart Guide to pair with your Type 3765 toothbrush. However, this depends on the firmware version of your toothbrush. Please read the notes about the 3742 Version B / Version 2.1 above.

  47. Hi I have a 3742 version B smartguide

However, I have a Oral B IO toothbrush that works with an app via bluetooth. I am wondering how to connect it up if possible. When I try to synchronise it pressing on the setting button for 3 seconds does put the screen to show L_ _ however it does not flash or connect when I start the toothbrush. I wondered if there was a way of connecting them even if that ment operating on the smart guide

    1. It is unlikely that any iO toothbrushes will work with the SmartGuide. You need to check to see if there is an option within the smartphone app to turn on SmartGuide compatibility on the toothbrush.

  48. I have a smart clock but it doesn’t work with mytype 3772
    pretty disappointing.

    1. The 3772 doesn’t have any wireless connectivity so cannot connect to a Smart Guide or phone app.

  49. I have had my Braun for years, perhaps over a decade, maybe 2. It has been working great.
Several days ago I think I pressed something wrong, perhaps the mode button for too long. Not knowing what I did exactly, had some trouble getting out of what seemed to be locked toothbrush.

Next day I noticed that the SmartGuide was not registering when I started brushing, though sometime during the 2 minute brushing, it would start registering.

I’ve tried everything I can think of that I could find online or discovered by trial and error:
Pressing power and mode button simultanously for several seconds until the toothbrush beeped.
With toothbrush off, pressing mode button until power button turned on and mode button blinking. Only 2 subsequent pushes of the mode button would exit out of this.

I’ve tried putting the QuickGuide in L mode and running the toothbrush but the L mode would time out before it could register the toothbrush.
Once I was able to see it go to L 01 but then went back to L —
Tried L mode while trying the hidden functions I described for the toothbrush.

    What’s going on?

    1. What is the 4-digit Type number marked on your toothbrush? You might have switched off the radio functionality of your brush (intended for use in hospitals or on aeroplanes) so if you look up the online manual this will tell you how to re-enable radio functionality so it can pair with the Smart Guide.

      1. I figured it out. Note that if the radio was turned off, then the two would NEVER connect, but often after a time it would connect.
In my troubleshooting prior to my post I probably did turn off/on the radio, but I never noticed the wireless indicator on the brush turning off and on.

        But enough of the suspense.
I solved it by pulling the batteries out of the Smart Guide. Seeing it was still showing correct time, didn’t think I was making any effect even after 30 seconds or more and shorting out the battery terminals to discharge any residual power in the guide.
        That fixed it.

Now as far as what holding the mode button down until the power LED lit, here’s what it does, which could be seen on the Smart Guide.
On going into the setup mode, hitting power button would toggle between pausing at 2min or 30sec.
On pressing the mode button again, pressing the power button would select if it counted up from 0 or down from 2 min.

I thought I had the 4 star guide, but found out I have the 5 star model as the 5th star would come on after 2:30 of runtime.
By the way the brush is a 3762. I didn’t have that information on the initial post and solved the problem by the next day.

  50. I can confirm that the oral-b smart guide 3742 B version will not pair with a new smart 5500 series bluetooth brush, model 3765, with version 13 firmware (as found via the app). There is also no place that enabling it could be found in the app. So I guess I will send it back…sigh….
